Most people fall into one of three categories of learning styles: visual learning, auditory learning, or kinesthetic learning. There are few people who fall into more than one style of learning. When designing for a product it is important to do as best as possible to include items to appeal to all three learning styles.
Visual Learning
Visual learners are best when given videos, pictures, charts, maps or other images that can help them visualize the problem and solution. Visual learners tend to think in imagery. They often will play out a scenario in their minds visualizing every aspect or complication. When designing for visual learners be prepared to have numerous images and videos. If the product is a website for learning how to draw you should incorporate step-by-step screen shots of the techniques being taught. For example, if I were to design a website to learn how to draw a face I'd include an image of each part of the face to be drawn: the eyes, the nose, the mouth, and facial hair and other characteristics.
Auditory Learning
Auditory learners are listeners. They excel at listening to lectures and are often more comfortable at studying to music. Music and sounds help to stimulate the auditory learner's mind. Auditory learners tend to think is sounds, rhythms and patterns and are very susceptible to the sounds of their surroundings. Auditory learners learn best using books, lectures, audio recordings, etc…
When designing for audible learners it is important to include sounds and recordings. If designing the same website to learn how to draw a solution would be to have an artist explain each step of the process within a recording (video or audio) and include it on the site. Adding audio is also the best step to take when designing a website that may have a large market for visually impaired persons.
Kinesthetic Learning
Kinesthetic learners are hands-on experimental learners. They tend to do best by following hands-on tutorials or by trial and error. They are the act now, think later learners. Kinesthetic learners learn through movement and touch, and benefit most from physical experience. Designing for kinesthetic learners is a lot like designing for visual learners. You should incorporate tutorial type functions if the product is a how-to website. This will allow them to try out the new techniques being taught as they are learning it.
To have a successful product you should be prepared to design a website/product that is appealing to all three types of learners. If at all possible you should also make sure the site is as ADA accessible as possible.
